Frost

Frosty day but bright. Tea and crisps in the Walled Garden. Not many others around. Two Pantechnicons outside the main door probably clearing the hall before major works. The pond had frozen in places and seagulls were sitting on top.

Fire and lanterns

Went up to Forty Hall last Saturday at 4pm to see the lantern parade. Children had been making lanterns which they paraded around the grounds. What we didn't expect was the fire show that followed. Watching this guy juggle with flaming torches and turn himself in to a human Catherine Wheel was quite spectacular. It was good to see the house itself lit up with projected effects on the back wall. This special event was the last now until 2012 when the hall reopens after its refit. It will be interesting to see how the house is refurbished.
In the meantime, I shall still be visiting the grounds and drinking tea!

Met today by a squirrel sitting on the fence by the gate.
Sun was out but not warm

Seagulls and Sunshine

A sunny november day, Mist in the air and dew on the grass. Walked around the pond in front of the house. Impressed by the number of seagulls sitting alog the edge. Watched a Canadian Goose launch itself in to the water. Was attacked by some dive bombing pigeons.
Noticed how things are dying back in the walled garden.
Noticed a conference taking place in the banqueting suite. Delegates looking longing out of the window over cups of coffee.

Sunshine and repairs

A sunny day today, a little colder then it has been.
Quite a large party in the cafe getting ready for a ramble through the grounds.
Have noticed that Forty Hall is to be closed to the public until 2012 while it under goes a major refit! At least the grounds will still be open.
Also noticed that there is a Lantern making event on Saturday 20th November between 2pm and 4pm with a parade. Might turn up to watch.

Calendula and Crows

A grey start to the day. Mum and I, undeterred bought two Tea's to take out and went to sit in the Walled Garden. Observed a Crow making much noise seemingly talking to a wooden post. We had discussed whether it might have been a Rook!
The Colours here at Forty Hall are quite spectacular. This display of Calendula or Pot Marigold is simplicity itself.
There are many other plants that are either still in bloom or are coming on early. The weather is remarkably warm for November. This Rhododendron is still blooming.

The drizzle turned to heavier rain and by twelve we were gone.

On the doorstep

I am lucky. Just a short walk and I am in the grounds of Forty Hall. Situated in the London Borough of Enfield, just within the M25, the grounds of Forty Hall and the neighbouring Whitewebbs must be one of London's best kept secrets. It is one of the few places I visit regularly and spend time on my own just looking and listening, away from it all.
